Software Opportunity for Leonardo Affiliate Members
The use of Chaos Theory in artistic creation is one of the most exciting and interesting applications in the search for new forms in Digital Art. These models offer creative methods linked to mechanisms derived from natural evolution, dynamic systems and evolutionary computation. Moreover, Chaos Theory methods allow researchers and artists to create artificial worlds by which it is possible to carry on advanced experimentations.
The Evolutionary Systems Group (ESG) at the University of Calabria (Italy) carries out studies at the edge of art and science. Starting from dynamic systems derived from Chua’s circuit – the paradigm of Chaos Theory – and using appropriate coding methods, different types of computational systems have been developed, which allow the creation of digital sound, music and images.
ESG, in collaboration with Leonardo, is pleased and excited to offer to Leonardo Affiliate Members two of these experimental software packages for experimentation and development purposes. The software, based on Chua’s Circuit attractors, can be used for visual, sound or music applications.
ESG will make the software available to interested Leonardo Affiliate Members free of charge, to be used by artists, musicians, sound designers or other creative researchers within the Affiliate Member’s organization. In exchange, users of the software will submit to ESG researchers a report and respond to a questionnaire by Blackwell & Green (2007), regarding the cognitive dimensions in the use of the software in art, sound and music. Moreover, users may contribute to the implementation of the software, developing applications useful for experimentation.
In addition to the software and user’s manuals, ESG will also provide interactive environments through which users can learn the main concepts about chaos relevant to use of the software.
